Michelle popped up on stage to introduce a new initiative focusing on education for girls across the world, promoting the hashtag #62milliongirls, referring the 62 million girls now not in education. “We need women for peace, we need women for development”, she said, noting that the German government has expanded childcare and passed a law requiring major companies to have boards that are at least 30% female. “They deserve the same chances to get an education as my daughters and your daughters and all of our children”.

In the video appearance, Obama asked supporters to post photos of themselves on Twitter and Instagram along with a message about what they learned in school using #62milliongirls.
The event, which aired on MSNBC, was hosted by Stephen Colbert, Kerry Washington, Salma Hayek Pinault, Olivia Wilde and other top celebrities.
