Eddie Vedder Beyonce provided one of the highlights at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival on Saturday when they did a duet of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.” Seated before the large audience in New York’s Central Park, Vedder announced Beyonce, who joined him onstage for a paired-down performance that featured just their vocals and the Pearl Jam frontman playing piano. In the midst of Beyonce and Vedder’s duet, as he continued to strum his guitar, a speech from the late Nelson Mandela played in the background during which the former President of South Africa talked about poverty and how it can “be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.” Mandela further noted overcoming poverty was a “fundamental right,” and as long as there’s still poverty, there can be “no true freedom.”
